When Do Termites Fly?
Flying termites are one of the most obvious signs that there is an infestation of termites. Usually, they are visible during the spring and summer months.
Besides the obvious problem of eating wooden objects and roof tiles, termites can also cause serious damage to fascias, the overhanging eaves and other structures on your property. If you think you might have a problem, call a termite control company.
If you see a swarm of termites, it is very likely they came from a nearby underground nest. These termites are not harmful to humans. The only reason they are visible is because they use their wings to fly short distances.
Termites do not generally live very long after they take flight. The majority of them die within 24 hours. The other surviving termites are picked off by other termite-eating critters.
Swarming is a process that occurs when a colony needs to expand. The termites will start to search for a new place to establish a new colony. This process is also known as “colonising” a new site.
The termites will fly around looking for a new site to build their nests. They do this because they are highly attracted to light. They will then land and begin to build the colony. This is a very common occurrence in the pest control industry.
Typically, the young adult winged termites will emerge from the nests in a large group. These termites are called alates, and they have four equal-length wings.
