What Head Lice Cause Hair Loss

They are grayish white or tan in color and about the size of a sesame seed. They also lay their eggs on the head, called nits. These nits look similar to dandruff but do not fall off like dandruff does. These lice attach themselves to the hair close to the scalp, so you can find them easily.
The symptoms of head lice infestation may include itching, odor, and disturbed sleep. The itching may cause the scalp to develop an infection. In addition, the lice may have become resistant to the products used to treat them, and you may have to take prescription medication if you’re suffering from a severe case. Some people experience hair loss after undergoing lice treatment, but it is rare. This may be a side effect of the harsh chemicals in the shampoos.
Head lice are parasitic. They live on human blood and usually stay close to the scalp. Sometimes, they are also found in the eyelashes and eyebrows. Adult head lice lay six to eight eggs each day on the scalp, which hatch within nine days. The eggs grow and develop into nymphs, which feed off the blood from the scalp. Untreated head lice infestation can lead to hair loss and other symptoms.
