Fruit flies lay eggs on fruit and vegetables. They tend to prefer bananas, tomatoes, squash, and apples. Adult females lay up to 2,000 eggs on moist or rotting surfaces. The eggs hatch after 30 hours and the larvae start to feed on the decayed food. The larvae then go through three instar stages and pupate for five days. Afterwards, the fruit fly will fly out of the pupal stage and start reproducing.
A few common sources of fruit flies include decayed food, trash cans, and recycling bins. It is also important to make sure that your windows and door screens are secure. If they are not, adult fruit flies can easily fly in.
