Alates, the only termite caste with wings, are produced at a specific stage in the colony’s life cycle. When conditions are right, they’ll fly out of the colony and set up a new one.
When termites swarm, they will usually break off their wings, which will make crawling easier. The discarded wings are a sure sign that a mature termite is leaving the nest.
