Termites – Why Do Termites Like Light?
Termites are small, but destructive creatures that can chew through piles of clothing and wood. They are a common annoyance in homes, but they can also be a big threat to your health. If you suspect an infestation, it’s important to know what to do. You don’t have to panic. There are steps you can take right away to minimize the risk.
Termites swarm when they are looking for a new nest to colonize. They usually swarm around doors, windows, or other light sources. Occasionally, you may even see them flying through your home.
If you see termites swarming, you should immediately turn off exterior lighting and blinds to keep the insects out of your house. You may also have to call your local pest control service.
Termites can enter a home through cracks in brick mortar or soil. You should also be cautious of any holes in wood that is contacting the soil. If you find a hole, you should fill it with pressure-treated wood or a barrier to stop termites from getting inside.
If you notice a swarm of winged termites in your home, this is a good sign that you have a problem. These are usually light-coloured and often fly through doors, windows, or street lights. They are attracted to light and can leave their wings behind. If you are unsure whether a swarm is due to an infestation, consider taking a look at your windows and door frames.
