How Far Do Termites Fly?
Termites do not usually fly very far. They prefer to stay close to their colonies and do not move house to house. However, if you see them flying you can take steps to reduce your risk.
Depending on the species, termites will make different types of flights. For instance, subterranean termites build mud tubes to travel underground. These tubes protect termites from cool air and allow them access to food sources.
Termites swarm in the spring, after rain, and after an event that causes the weather to warm. During this time, the termites will start to form new colonies near a source of food. These colonies will mate and produce babies.
Foraging termites leave a chemical trail called pheromones that other termites can detect. These chemical trails are used to attract other termites to a food source. Termites have the ability to travel up to 130 feet away from their colony.
If you see termites swarming, you should investigate the source. Swarming can happen in your home, or even in your yard.
Swarms are most common in the early morning. During this time, termites will search for a new location for a nest. If you suspect termite activity, you should turn off exterior lighting and use curtains to restrict the light. You should also keep your doors and windows closed. This will help to minimize the risk of a swarm.
During a termite swarm, alates will fly for only a few seconds before settling down and shedding their wings. This is a sign that the colony is mature.
