Can Termites Get on Dogs?
Termites are very elusive insects. They live and breed in dark, moist environments. They hide their activity from humans and pets. If you suspect that you have a problem with termites, consult a licensed exterminator. They can help you find the best treatment.
Usually, dogs will have little to no direct contact with termites. However, they can still be a source of irritation. They can be bitten and scratched by termites, but they are unlikely to cause any harm.
If you suspect your home is infested with termites, you should take your dog along for the inspection. The dog can detect termite activity even if it is not being trained. If it is an untrained dog, it will likely start sniffing and exploring the house. If it smells anything bad, it will probably run around frantically.
When your dog is not at home, you can keep him away from any areas where the termite infestation has occurred. Alternatively, you can take him out of the home while the treatment is underway. This can be a hassle, though, and you may have to remove everything from the home.
If your dog is outside of the house, you should also consider whether it will be safe for him to enter the infested area. In addition to keeping him out of the infested area, you may want to bury some of his food and bedding. If you are using chemicals for the treatment, you should be aware that they can be harmful to pets.
