Are Termites Always Around?

They are wood-destroying organisms that live in tropical and sub-tropical areas. They can cause significant damage to your house. They are primarily found in the southern United States.
They are a huge problem in the United States, with over a billion dollars worth of damages reported. Typically, these critters enter the house through open windows and doors. They can also enter through expansion joints. When they reach a certain size, they can build a nest underground.
During the spring, many subterranean termites swarm. These creatures live in colonies based on a caste system. The colony consists of a queen, which is capable of producing thousands of eggs per day. The queen may live up to 30 years.
Once the colony reaches a certain size, the queen sends winged reproductives to find a new home. Depending on the size of the colony, there could be as few as a few hundred alates or as many as several thousand Formosan swarmers.
Swarming occurs when conditions are right. The termites are looking for food and moisture sources. They usually swarm during daylight hours. They will find a home and begin to build a nest.
Swarming termites often die on window sills or other surfaces. They are often confused for flying ants. These swarmers do not bite, and their wings are usually left behind.
