A Review of Which Termites Are Edible
Termites are widely eaten by humans in many parts of the world. Several of the species are eaten raw, roasted or cooked. Some are considered delicacies. Some are eaten as a traditional medicine. In the present review, we aim to describe the usage of termites by human populations worldwide.
Currently, there are 45 species of termites in the world. They belong to four families. These include Embiratermes, Nasutitermes, Macrotermes, and Odontotermes. Besides being edible, these insects are also important natural resources. They help in the decomposition of organic matter in tropical areas. They are also a rich source of protein and vitamins.
As a food resource, wild foraged termites are a common source of protein and carbohydrates in sub-Saharan Africa. The colonies contain the primary queen, king, and neotenic queens. Depending on the species, some alates are fungus farming termites.
Termites can be eaten as a nutty, crunchy, or spicy snack. Typically, they are roasted over hot coals or fried in oil. They are also sold in markets. Some people in Africa believe that eating termites increases their importance.
In Nigeria, the termite “esunsun” is consumed as a food. Other species of insects are eaten as a delicacy. In Chinatown, San Francisco, diving beetles are available. In New Zealand, maggots are often eaten as a delicacy. In Kenya, there are no fears of eating termites.
Some African cultures believe that the queen termite is unfit for consumption. However, this is not the case in some countries. Some countries, such as Cameroon and Uganda, give the termite queens to malnourished children.
