How Do Flies Eat?

Flies eat in a variety of ways. Many species have spongy mouthparts and cannot chew solid food, so they ingest the food in a liquid form. Some flies even vomit their food, regurgitating it back out in bubbles. However, flies are also capable of digesting concentrated foods.

Flies are drawn to human and animal waste because it contains moisture and is an excellent source of protein. They also prefer to feed on animal urine, which has higher concentrations of nutrients. However, any type of urine is an attractive source of ammonia and moisture. If you have a fly problem, you should try to eliminate food sources such as trash cans and dumpsters. Additionally, make sure not to leave any pet waste or blood lying around.

House flies are general feeders. They feed on both human and animal fecal remains, and they regurgitate liquid food. They will also feed on overripe vegetables and sugary substances. Their mouthparts are similar to straws, which make it easy for them to suck up liquids.

Fruits are another major food source for flies. Their high starch content and tiny particles attract flies. Avoid leaving any fruit out when you’re not using it, because they will pierce through the skin and regurgitate the contents.
