How Do Cockroaches Play Dead?
Cockroaches cannot play dead if more than three are nearby. If they are disturbed, some will try to flee while others will fidget in place. A dead cockroach will not move, but it will attract other pests into your home. Cockroaches are often eaten by ants and lizards.
If a cockroach is poisoned, it will play dead. This is a natural survival mechanism cockroaches use to conserve energy and minimize blood loss. Cockroaches do not swim, but they can withstand water for up to 40 minutes. They also close their spiracles while submerged, so they do not drown easily.
In some cases, cockroaches play dead intentionally, but it’s important to remember that this behavior is not always an indication of cockroaches being killed. Instead, they may be protecting themselves from predators. Although cockroaches are nocturnal and prefer warm places, they will not move unless they feel threatened. If a cockroach rolls over or appears to be dead after an insecticide application, it may be a sign that a cockroach infestation is present in your home.
Despite this, cockroaches can survive extremely cold and hot temperatures. They can also regrow limbs and live without a head. Their incredible survival abilities make them a difficult pest to get rid of. Even if cockroaches are dead, they can play dead for several hours.
