Can Cockroach Survive Radiation?

Cockroaches are known to be tougher than humans. They can survive temperatures of up to -200 degrees Celsius and high pressures of up to six times the pressure of the ocean. They can also survive in the vacuum of space. Despite these traits, it’s not clear if radiation will kill cockroaches. Despite their low radiation tolerance, roaches can survive six to fifteen times the lethal radiation dose for humans. A parasitic wasp, however, can survive 180 times that amount.

However, the test conducted by Mythbusters was not accurate. The radiation exposure was merely a single dose of radiation, and the cockroach was not tested to lay viable eggs. This fact was put to the test by the reality show Mythbusters. In fact, they found that German Cockroaches survived exposures of up to 10,000 rems. Despite their small size, the animals’ bodies are simple, allowing them to repair more cellular damage. Cockroaches also have an ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions and pass on what they have learned to other generations.

The test also revealed that roaches can survive radiation from nuclear explosions. Although they can’t survive the intense heat and radiation produced by a nuclear blast, they are more resilient to radiation than mammals. Cockroaches’ cell cycles are much slower than those of humans, which makes them resistant to radiation. They also molt only once a week. Because of these characteristics, they wouldn’t be particularly vulnerable to ionizing radiation, despite being exposed to high doses.
