Where Can You Find Fire Ants?

Originally from South America, fire ants are now found in several states in the U.S. and in a few locations in other countries. They can be found in residential and commercial areas. They are most often reddish or black in color.

Fire ants are opportunistic foragers, feeding on virtually anything they find. Their food source is often decaying plant material. Fire ants can be a nuisance, especially in back and front yards. They may hitch rides inside your home on plants, outdoor toys and mulch. If you have fire ants in your home, it’s important to find and eliminate the source of the infestation.

Fire ants are also known to damage plants and outdoor electrical fixtures. They may nest in pipes, walls, pipes, rotten logs, and around the base of trees.

They are most commonly found in the Southeastern U.S., but have also been seen in other states. They are invasive, damaging native animals and plants.

Fire ants are 1.6 to 5 millimeters in length. They are reddish to black and sometimes have a central hole at the top. They are typically found in warm, moist areas.
