What Causes Termites to Swarm?
If you are noticing termite swarms, this is an indication of an infestation of the insects. This means you need to call a professional exterminator for help. These pests can cause significant damage to your home, especially if they have gotten inside.
These insects can swarm indoors, where they find food and water. In this case, they are most likely in your kitchen, bathroom, or basement. You may also see them swarming near your windows.
Swarming is an effort to expand the colony. When they are swarming, they will try to find a mate and start a new colony. If they fail to do so, they will die.
If you are unable to contain the swarm, they will start a flight to the open air. During this time, you should see hundreds of swarmers. They will be trying to fly to a light source. They are not very good fliers.
Normally, a termite swarm will be carried away by a strong wind. But, in some cases, the termites will not be able to escape the house. This can happen when a storm arrives or there is a lot of rain. If the termites cannot find soil to eat, they will die.
Swarming termites are often found near windows, sliding glass doors, and light fixtures. If you spot a swarm in your home, you can vacuum them up or bring them to a local cooperative extension center. The majority of them will die during the vacuuming process.
