How Do Termites Come Into Your Home?
Termites are one of the most damaging pests to human structures. These insects live in colonies, made up of workers and queens. They attack homes and other structures, destroying them quickly. Their colonies are often built in old, rotten wood or in tree stumps. They may feed on furniture, books, photo frames, and other items. They are also attracted to moisture and rotting wet materials.
Termites can enter a house through tiny holes in concrete blocks or foundation cracks. Some enter through wooden eaves or window sills. Others find their way in through holes in the foundation vents.
Termites eat cellulose, a substance found in a variety of plants and human materials. They also feed on herbivores’ droppings. Eventually, their food supply dwindles and they die. This is why many termites are killed by predators.
The most common species are subterranean termites. They can enter your home through the ground or through mud tubes, which look like narrow mud patches. They have to get to their food source. They build mud tubes along cracks in the walls or near pipes to get there.
When termites are in a colony, they are usually working together to find a food source. After finding wood, they will take it back to the underground nest. Eventually, the colony will grow into thousands.
These tiny insects are very difficult to detect. If you see a swarm of termites flying around your home, you should immediately close the windows and doors. You should also try to remove any loose wood pieces.
