What Should Rats Eat?
If you own rats, you should be aware of the foods they should avoid. Various foods contain high levels of sugar or fat and can be harmful for rats. It is best to give your rats healthy, low-fat diets. Avoid feeding your rats seed/grain mixes, as they are high in fat and sugar. These foods make rats vulnerable to malnutrition and obesity. Also, rats tend to pick only their favorite bits from these mixes, missing out on important nutrients. Instead, give them cereals and breads in small amounts. Also, provide fresh water at all times.
Rats need to eat several times a day. The base diet for an active, healthy rat should contain a couple of teaspoons of vegetables, a small amount of grains, and a small amount of protein. If you’re unsure about the amount of food your rat needs, consult a vet.
Rats can eat cereal, cooked brown rice, and whole-wheat pasta. Their diet should also contain small amounts of protein, such as lean meat. For fats, you can offer them pumpkin seeds and unsalted nuts. In addition, you can feed them popsicles. Just make sure to use a sugar-free version.
Another common food for rats is eggs. Although eggs are a great source of protein, they’re a bit large for the small rodents to handle. Rats have been known to carry chicken eggs home, but they are much more likely to stumble upon smaller wild bird eggs.
