What Rats Can’t Eat
There are many things rats can’t eat, and it’s important to understand what is safe for them. Some of these things are toxic, while others may simply be unhealthy. One of the best ways to prevent a rat from becoming sick is to avoid feeding it some of these foods.
Generally speaking, oranges are safe for rats, provided they don’t eat the peel. However, if your rat eats the orange peel, it’s important to consult your vet. Orange juice and chocolate oranges are also safe for rats. You should not feed your rat peanut butter, since the fatty acids in peanut butter could lead to choking.
Rats can eat vegetables and fruit, but they need to be properly cooked. They need protein to survive, so if you want to provide them with the best nutrition, choose poultry and liver. You can also give them small amounts of beef. For snacks, you can give your rat a few pieces of saltine crackers. However, they are high in sodium, and too much can make them ill. Also, they are not supposed to eat too much brown rice, as this will make their digestive system weak and can lead to disease.
Another important food for rats is water. Fresh water is essential for their wellbeing, so provide them with a clean water bottle, which they can access easily. Water bottles are available in many sizes in pet stores, and you should provide your rat with at least two of them. You should check their water bottles every morning and evening, and re-fill them as needed. Make sure to clean them regularly to avoid algae and blockages.
