What Does Head Lice Taste Like?

Head lice can be quite disgusting, but it’s important to understand that this tiny, parasitic creature is harmless and poses no health threat. The normal lice are very small insects with little meat, and their taste is similar to shrimp. These pests have no idea of hygiene or cleanliness, and they feed solely on human blood.

The first symptom of head lice is an itchy scalp. When you take a closer look, you may find live lice crawling close to your scalp and eggs that are stuck to your hair shaft. A full life cycle for a louse is 33 to 35 days, from egg laying to the first live insect. A female louse will lay up to 100 eggs, and these eggs will hatch within a week. Once they hatch, the empty egg case remains in your hair.

When you find a louse, you should use a louse comb to remove the eggs. However, some lice will remain unnoticed. The comb helps to pick out the live louse faster than you can with the naked eye. A lice comb has been shown to be four times more effective in identifying lice than can be detected with the naked eye.

Head lice are usually active at night. Children with symptoms of head lice often have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. They may also have an open sore on their neck. They may also be cranky and irritable. If you notice these symptoms, take your child to the doctor to determine if they are suffering from head lice.
