How Fast Head Lice Spread

Detecting live lice is usually not necessary in the beginning of an infestation. However, some people with sensitive scalps can discover lice sooner. In most cases, the itch and other symptoms of head lice do not appear until the infestation has advanced to moderate or severe levels. This is when parents can treat their child.

Infections caused by head lice are contagious and can easily spread between household members. However, you can take measures to prevent the spread of the infestation. It is important to avoid head-to-head contact between children at home and at school. Additionally, it is important to check your children after they have come into contact with someone who has lice. To treat head lice, treat the nits close to the scalp.

Using a phenol solution to kill head lice can be effective. It is recommended to soak combs, brushes and other items in a phenol solution for about an hour. Afterward, rinse thoroughly and store in a plastic bag for up to two weeks. Do not use insecticides or fogging to kill the lice. Vacuuming daily is also recommended.

Head lice will usually bite the scalp and cause itching. The itching can last for days or weeks. In severe cases, a person might even scratch his/her head excessively, which can lead to a secondary bacterial infection. In addition, the symptoms of head lice include sleep disturbance and irritability. Adult lice attach to the hair and lay eggs. After a week or so, new eggs will hatch. Nymphs will then begin to lay eggs.
