How Common is Head Lice in Adults?

Head lice can be transmitted through personal items, including hats and towels. The lice will also infest a person’s hair if they are sharing the same bedding, towels, or combs. The infection does not spread to pets.

Adult head lice are the size of a sesame seed and are tan or grayish-white in color. They live for approximately 30 days on a person’s head and molt a few times over the next nine to fifteen days. The lice eggs are not capable of hatching at temperatures below the scalp.
