It’s also important to wash your clothing regularly. While this method won’t get rid of head lice, it will significantly reduce your chances of contracting the infection.

When you have head lice, the first sign is itching and scratching. These symptoms are also associated with nits that can be found on your hair. In some cases, lice may appear on the skin, which can cause a secondary bacterial infection. However, this might take up to two weeks for the symptoms to become noticeable.

In severe cases, treatment can involve applying a topical pediculicide to your hair and body. These are available over-the-counter medications with permethrin or pyrethrum extracts. Prescription medications may also be necessary. Once the lice are eradicated, their eggs will die as well.
