How Bad Are Drain Flies?

The life cycle of drain flies is very short. They can lay as many as 300 eggs in a day. When these eggs hatch, they live for nine to fifteen days. After hatching, they will reproduce and lay another 300 eggs. Drain flies are more prevalent in drains that are seldom used.

Drain flies are small insects, about an eighth of an inch. These insects like to congregate around standing water. They are also called sewer flies, moth flies, or filter flies. Because they are so small, you cannot see them very well. These pests lay eggs in the garbage disposal, bathroom, and kitchen drains.

Fortunately, there are many ways to get rid of drain flies. One of the simplest methods is to use a drain cleaner. These chemicals contain baking soda and vinegar. Baking soda will react with vinegar, killing the larvae in the drain. If this doesn’t work, try using an insect growth regulator (IGR). It will prevent eggs from hatching and larvae from developing.
