Do Fleas Cause Bumps on Dogs?
If you notice your dog has itchy bumps, it might be a sign that your dog has fleas. Flea bites can cause a lot of pain and itching, and they can also lead to secondary infections. These infections are rare, but they can occur when a flea infestation is severe.
Fleas are commonly found in cats and dogs. The bites can cause itching and the animal will scratch constantly to remove the fleas. The fleas leave behind dark, tiny faeces. These faeces leech blood into the animal’s tissue. Flea bites should be treated with antiseptic soap, and antihistamine medications may be prescribed to reduce the itching and swelling.
Adult fleas are about an eighth of an inch long, and are reddish brown in color. They are thin, with large back legs. They can jump up to 12 inches and can live on the fur of your dog. Each adult flea can harbor up to 100 immature fleas, so it is important to keep your dog and home free from these critters. Often, they can be found in bedding, carpets, or even in the backyard.
When fleas bite dogs, they cause intense itching and inflammation. They can also cause skin infections. This is called flea allergy dermatitis.
