How Big is a Cockroach?
Cockroaches are tiny creatures. Their adult bodies can be as small as one-half to two inches. They have six legs and a flattened back. Some species of cockroaches are capable of powered flight, but most species cannot fly for extended periods. These insects are flattened and oval-shaped and have long, pointed antennae. The immature cockroach, also known as the nymph, is about one-half inch long with wingless legs.
Female cockroaches lay eggs in cases called oothecae. Generally, these eggs contain 10 to 20 eggs. However, some varieties, like the German cockroach, can have up to 40 eggs. When the eggs hatch, the babies are known as nymphs. These nymphs are small versions of adults without wings. Most cockroaches are nocturnal, and they prefer to live in dark, warm spaces. Some can hide in cracks as small as one-sixteenth of an inch.
The most common type of cockroach found in kitchens is the German cockroach. These are about half an inch long and have two black stripes on their backs. They tend to hide in cracks and crevices, and prefer a moist environment. They are also more difficult to spot than other cockroach species, so they should be avoided.
A cockroach will produce approximately seventy-three droppings each day. This is enough to cover the surface of a paper napkin. As they grow, they shed their skins. Their life cycle can last anywhere from four to five and a half months.
