How Large Are Cockroach Eggs?

Cockroaches have a number of different types of eggs, and you can see them with the naked eye. These are typically dark brown or reddish, and measure about 5mm in length. Egg cases from German cockroaches are much smaller than those of American cockroaches, and are less than a quarter-inch long. The egg cases of these types of cockroaches will have a ridge running down their length, and this ridge serves as a weak spot that will allow the nymphs to break out and escape.

Female cockroaches lay several eggs inside an egg case called an ootheca. These cases contain a protein substance that hardens into a protective shell. The ootheca is different for different species of cockroaches, and some species drop them into tiny holes or cracks before the eggs hatch.

Cockroaches usually lay their eggs in places that are warm and protected from cold or high temperatures. Their young will take care of themselves once they hatch. Their nesting areas are often in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry areas. You may also find them in garbage bins. Cockroach eggs are usually found in areas that are hidden behind appliances, baseboards, and garbage bins.

Cockroaches can lay a lot of eggs, but their size varies depending on the species. The German cockroach is very prolific, and can produce more than 30,000 offspring within one year. In contrast, the brown-banded cockroach only produces about eight oothecae throughout its lifetime, and an American cockroach’s case usually contains between fifteen and sixteen eggs.
