Cockroaches With Wings

Cockroaches with wings have two sets of wings – the outer set serves as a protective covering, while the inner set serves as wings for flight. The outer pair of wings are thick, while the inner wings are thin and membranous. When cockroaches are flying, they use the wings to readjust their center of gravity and counterbalance themselves, which is very helpful for avoiding danger.

Some species of cockroach can fly – the American cockroach is one of them. It can survive for a week without food and can fly for short distances. Some species even use their wings to glide when they are highly disturbed. Cockroaches that can fly include the Cuban cockroach, American cockroach, and Asian cockroach.

Although it is possible to find cockroaches with wings, you are not likely to find them in your house. The American cockroach, for instance, can fly but is much more common. The American cockroach is 25 to 40 millimeters long and reddish brown. Another common cockroach, the Smoky brown, is three to 35 millimeters long and is reddish brown. Despite being small and harmless, cockroaches can be a serious health threat.
