How Come I Can’t See Bed Bugs?

Most people can’t see bed bugs until they’ve got a serious infestation. It’s possible that you’re disturbing the hiding places of bed bugs by moving furniture, or by simply putting things in boxes. You might also mistake bed bugs for other insects, such as carpet beetles and cockroach nymphs. Since bed bugs are smaller than apple seeds, they’re easy to misdiagnose.

Bed bugs prefer dark places, such as beds and mattresses. This means that they don’t have to travel far to feed or breed. When left unchecked, bed bugs breed and lay eggs. The best way to detect a bed bug infestation is to lift your mattress and flip it over. This way, you can inspect the mattress for bugs during the day. Because bed bugs prefer dark places, you’ll have the best chance of spotting them on your mattress.

You can also use a flashlight to check for bugs on your bed and in the surrounding area. Bed bugs hide in piping in mattresses, in gaps between the legs of furniture, in walls and floorboards, and even in carpet and furniture. When you disturb them, they scatter.

If you can see the adult bed bug, the nymphs are a good indicator. The nymphs are quite small, and most people aren’t familiar with them. Nonetheless, they leave behind shed shells that indicate where they’re hiding and feeding.
