Do Bed Bugs Drink Water?

A common question we get asked from people is “Do bed bugs drink water?” The answer is no, they do not. They obtain their fluid from the blood they feed on. Since blood is extremely moist, bedbugs cannot survive without it. Keeping a moderately humid environment will help you minimize infestation.

If you don’t want bedbugs to get into your bed, try to isolate the source of water. This way, you can prevent their larva from being attracted to the source of water. However, you should keep in mind that bedbugs are not able to live in pure oxygen. If you see an infestation, you must remove the water source.

Although bedbugs do not drink water, they are highly attracted to human blood. While they prefer to feed on humans, they will feed on any warm-blooded animal. Moreover, fresh water will not help them survive, as their feeding instinct is triggered by the warmth and scent of your skin.

Bedbugs cannot swim. Even if they are submerged in water, their strength will deplete. They may survive for a day or two in water, but they would not survive much longer. That’s why they prefer to stay inside, where they are protected from predators.
