What Do Carpenter Ants Look Like?
Among the many species of ants that can be found in the United States are carpenter ants. These ants are part of the Formicidae family.
These ants can be red, black, or black and red. They are found in a wide variety of locations, including suburban areas, farms, and wooded areas. They are known to feed on honeydew and on other types of insects and plants. These ants are omnivorous, meaning they will eat both meats and fruits.
These ants look similar to termites, although they have a more uniform body. They have one node between their thorax and abdomen, and two sets of wings that are equal in length. Some species of ants also have two nodes on their waists.
Carpenter ants are divided into three different castes. These castes are the worker, the queen, and the swarmer. The worker is the first adult of the colony. It collects food, cares for the queen, and tends to the first batch of eggs. The queen is larger than the worker and is generally a quarter to a half an inch long.
Carpenter ants live in nests that are built inside wood. They prefer moist, decayed wood, and have a tendency to construct their nests in hollow spaces. They often build their nests in the walls of porch columns or in the wall void behind dishwashers.
Carpenter ants are one of the largest ant species in the United States. They are typically found in wooded areas and in suburban areas, but can also be found in urban areas.
