How Small Are Ants?

Depending on the species, ants can vary in size from about a half centimeter to a half inch. But they all have one thing in common – a triangle of three small, simple eyes.

Pharaoh ants, one of the most common household invaders, are tiny ants that are usually found in large buildings and hospitals. They are able to carry several diseases, including salmonella. Their nests are often located in voids in walls and floors.

A termite, which is usually 6 to 10 mm in size, has wings that are much longer than their body length. Their larval stage lasts about three weeks.

A leafcutter ant, also known as a woodcutting ant, has a length of about 10 mm. They are often found in tropical Florida. These ants are usually bright in color. They are not stinging.

The Siafu ant, also known as a driver ant, is a small ant that is about 9 to 14 mm long. They are reddish-black in color. They are usually found in South America.

The little black ant, a Myrmicinae species, is also a very small ant. It is also very common in urban areas. They love honeydew produced by aphids. They can also eat meat and seeds. They have twelve segmented antennae. They are small but have a big appetite.

Another species that is not stinging is the coconut ant. They are dark brown to black in color and nest in houses. They have a rotten coconut-like odor when crushed.
