Can You Eat Ants?

Thousands of species of ants are found all over the world. Most of them are not poisonous and are safe to eat. In fact, they are often considered a delicacy in many parts of the world.

Ants are high in protein, fat and other nutrients. They are also packed with antioxidants which help to protect your body from free radicals. In fact, insects can have three times more protein than a steak.

Ants are also known to carry viruses and bacteria. This is why it is important to cook them before you eat them. The cooking process will kill these contaminants, as well as parasites. This will also help to neutralize the acid found in ants.

Ants can be eaten raw or cooked. The taste will vary depending on the species you choose. For example, fire ants are very pungent. If you are unsure of which species to eat, you should probably avoid the ants of the wood ant family.

Ants are also known to have an aphrodisiac effect. In Colombia, for example, leafcutter ants are given out as wedding gifts.

Ants are known to have an impressive survival ability. In fact, a 62 year old Australian survived a heart attack by eating ants in the outback.

While insects are not recommended for long term survival, they are a great source of protein. For instance, one ounce of dry-roasted ants contains four grams of protein. They are also good sources of fat, magnesium, zinc and selenium.
