It’s not unusual for people to be allergic to ants. In fact, the majority of people who get a sting have a mild reaction. These reactions often include swelling, itching, and bumps in the affected area.
If you’ve been stung by ants, you’ll want to get medical help right away. You may experience anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening reaction. This reaction may involve your throat or stomach, and it can cause you to faint. You also may experience dizziness or difficulty breathing.
In severe cases, you may develop anaphylactic shock. This can happen when the swelling becomes too large to allow your blood to flow through your fingers. You may also experience chest pain, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing.
The signs of anaphylaxis are serious and should be treated immediately. Your medical provider will ask about your previous exposure to ants, and you will be tested for allergies to ants. You may be referred to an allergist for a desensitization injection. You can also purchase an epinephrine injector, also known as EpiPen.
Ant bite infections are more serious and need to be treated immediately. Infections may result in white pustules. These pustules are filled with infection fluids. You can also use antibiotic ointment on your skin for up to two days.
