Which Animals Eat Wasps?

Despite their reputation as predators, wasps are actually important members of the ecosystem. They build their nests in difficult-to-access locations, and serve as both pollinators and a food source for other species.

Wasps have stingers to protect themselves from attack. However, many insectivorous species choose to ignore these colors and instead prey on wasps without getting stung. In fact, a number of omnivorous mammals, reptiles, and amphibians prey on them.

Bees, spiders, and other stinging insects are a staple for these predators. In addition to wasps, these animals also hunt for other insects. Some species of spiders, bats, and weasels use webs to trap and harvest their food. A number of mammals, including bears, rodents, and foxes, also eat wasp larvae.

A large number of species of birds are known to eat wasps. Birds such as nighthawks, sparrows, and warblers are able to capture flying insects quickly. They also use their beaks to trap insects and wasps.

The European honey buzzard, for example, is a fierce predator. It has thick feathers around its face, which protect it from stings. It also roots through wasp nests to get at the larvae.

Asian geckos also eat Polistes wasps, but they have a nasty sting. Other animals, including rodents, mice, rats, and toads, eat wasp larvae.

Some omnivorous mammals, including black bears, prey on wasps. These predators also eat bees and honey. However, their keen sense of smell allows them to easily spot and kill wasps.
