When Do Wasps Come Out in the UK?

During the summer months, wasps come out and start buzzing around. They can be found in hedgerows, meadows and parks. They are also attracted to artificial light inside buildings. Some wasp species can be very aggressive. They may sting multiple times. They can also be found in wood sheds and lofts. They live in colonies.

The queen wasp, which lays eggs in the nest, spends its entire life there. When the queen dies, the male wasps are left to fend for themselves. The queen lays eggs for the first few workers. The workers then begin to build the nest. The nest may be underground, in the eaves of a house or garage or in a tree. The nest may be up to 30 cm across.

The queen wasp hibernates during winter. It is also known to hibernate in deep crevasses. During this time, the queen is confused as to where her food comes from. She may not have enough food to survive and starves to death. Occasionally, she will be caught by predators.

The queen wasp is responsible for pollinating plants. Her job is made more difficult by warm winters. When the weather gets colder, the queen wasp will die and the male wasps will die as well. In the UK, the majority of wasps die during the winter. Several species die before winter even begins.

Wasps are considered to be a pest. They can be aggressive and sting when threatened. They feed on insects, aphids and caterpillars. The queen wasp also feeds on sugars from the flowers.
