What Wasps Nest Underground?
Whether you have been stung by a wasp or are interested in learning more about this stinging insect, you may wonder what wasps nest underground. Wasps are predatory insects that feed on fruits, vegetables, and other garden pests. Some wasp species will create an underground colony with multiple entrances.
A ground nest will look like a clump of dirt with a small hole in the middle. Typically, the opening will be less than a quarter of an inch in diameter. It will also have small, thin streaks in the soil around the entrance. If you see a large number of wasps near the ground, you may be near a nest.
Some species of wasps are solitary, which means they don’t build nests specifically around a particular location. Others are social, which means they prefer to build nests in caves, hollow trees, or manmade structures. If you see a number of wasps, especially hornets, in your yard, it is important to know that they are stinging insects.
Wasps are a nuisance, especially in summer. They will sting multiple times, and can cause anaphylactic shock if they bite you. You can also see wasps carrying dead insects to the ground. This is a sign that they are bringing food to their underground nest. If you have a problem with wasps, call a professional pest service.
A ground nest can be very difficult to see. They will typically look like a clump of dirt, similar to a rabbit hole, or like rodent holes. A female Digger wasp will dig a tunnel about 30cm deep and then lay eggs in the middle. Once the egg hatches, the female will return to the nest.
