Which Termites Have Wings?

Unlike other insects, termites cannot fly. They use the wind to carry them around. They can fly for a short period of time, but are not very good fliers.
When termites are sexually mature, they leave the nest to seek food. They then shed their wings. The male and female termites, who will become the main reproducers of a new colony, are called “alates.” The termite king and queen are the largest of the reproductive termites. They typically grow to one or two inches long.
Depending on the species, winged termites can have either dark brown or grey wings. They are attracted to light during their flight, but they can only fly for a limited amount of time.
During the mating process, the male swarmer termites will follow the female swarmer termites to their chamber. They will then start the mating process.
Termites may also swarm at other times during their life cycle. The swarming period is usually a sign that termites are preparing to establish a new colony. They will then move to various locations, such as the baseboards or a wood structure, to start a new colony.
When they are ready to mate, the male and female termites will lose their wings. Their thorax and abdomen will be narrowed.
