What Are the Size of Termites?
Termites are insects that feed on wood and other cellulose based materials. Typically, they are between one-quarter and one-half of an inch long. In some species, they are larger than this. There are three main types of termites. Each type has its own specific size.
Subterranean termites are commonly found in the United States. They live in underground colonies and feed off of wood. They are one of the most dangerous pests because they can destroy entire buildings. They have cream to dark brown colored bodies. Their nests can be huge. Depending on the species, their nests can reach a few feet into the ground.
Drywood termites are also found in the United States. They are smaller than the other two species and have two pairs of wings. They can be found in the desert southwest. They are about half an inch long and have pale brown, oval-shaped heads. Their jaws are strong and they can acquire moisture by digesting cellulose.
They are similar to the other two species and can have enlarged mouthparts and a sticky fluid to defend themselves. They are about one-eighth of an inch long and have a distinct head.
Termites can be found in the desert southwest and southern Florida. They are the largest termites in the United States and can be up to one-inch in length. They can also be found in the Pacific coast. They are attracted to water-damaged areas. They do not usually infest structures.
