Termites with wings are usually a sight to see. This insect can be hard to spot, but it’s possible to identify these flying creatures by looking closely at their anatomy.

There are three main types of termites – alates, workers, and swarmers. Each type has its own typical role. These include reproducing, spreading, and swarming.

While all termites have some kind of wings, only alates are able to actually fly. Besides, their wings are always discarded.

For most homeowners, the only time they are likely to encounter a termite with wings is if they come from a professional pest control company. This isn’t a good reason to try and deal with the problem on your own.

Keeping your home free of wood debris can help protect against this and other unwanted visitors. If you have a termite infestation, consider an aggressive treatment plan. It’s also a good idea to inspect the perimeter of your exterior. If there are holes, mud tunnels, or other access points, you can cut them off. This will prevent more termites from coming in and causing more damage.

A termite’s body has one notable feature – a lower abdomen section that can grow to three eighths of an inch. This makes it easy to identify, but also means that it’s impossible to see it all at once.
