Whether you live in a concrete block home or a wood frame house, you’ll need to make sure you know how to get rid of termites. These tiny insects can be a big problem in your home, causing significant damage to the structural supports made of wood. Fortunately, you can prevent termite infestation with a few simple steps.

Generally, block homes are not as vulnerable to termite damage as wood-frame homes. However, there are some signs to look for that you should be aware of.

Termites are able to enter your home through small cracks in the foundation, as well as through hollow spaces in bricks and walls. This can cause significant damage to the wood-to-ground contact, which makes your home unlivable.

Subterranean termites are the most destructive type of termite. They build mud tubes to travel underground and they attack wood-frame homes. This is because they can access the wood inside of your home without having to make a connection with the ground.

Drywood termites are less aggressive than their cousins, and they are also harder to detect. These termites can enter your home through open soffit vents or through the attic.

Termites can also travel through vertical wood strips, called “furring,” that are used to nail drywall to the walls. These strips also provide pathways for subterranean termites to forage for food.

Termites will also chew through fiberboard, a product that is used for interior walls and ceilings. You may be able to see holes or a sunken line of paint in your walls, or you may have to pull back the siding around your windows and door casings to check for termite damage.
