These tunnels provide a network of access to sporadic food sources. The mounds are also used as air conditioning units. In the hot African climate, termites use the cool air inside the mound to regulate their body temperatures.

Various species of termites can construct mounds that are up to 98 feet wide. These termites live in Africa, South America, and Australia.

They can survive for up to five years in the ground. These termites build long-term structures and are not highly aggressive insects. The largest of these termites are the queens. They lay up to 165 million eggs during their lifetime.

They are capable of creating mounds that are four to six feet high. They also build meter-sized structures. These termite colonies can transport up to a quarter ton of soil and water per year.
