Will Spiders Eat Stink Bugs?

Stink bugs are pests that can be a real nuisance. They produce a foul odor and smell similar to cilantro or skunk spray. However, they are not harmful to humans. And in fact, they are often the source of meals for animals and other insects.

In fact, many spiders don’t even eat stink bugs. Instead, they can help to keep the population of these invasive species in check.

The brown marmorated stink bug is an exotic invader from Asia. They’ve wreaked havoc on crops in the U.S., especially in the Mid-Atlantic region. Since their arrival, they have been detected in more than forty states.

Fortunately, there are predatory insects, like ground beetles and jumping spiders, that can destroy them. But it’s not yet clear whether these spiders actually do a good job.

Nevertheless, they may be a helpful addition to the U.S. If they aren’t released until they can be proven to be harmless, they could be a big help.

Interestingly enough, they were first discovered in soil in 2001. A consortium of researchers conducted a citizen science survey to determine their presence.

This research was published in the journal Physiological Entomology. Researchers wondered if the Joros would spread to other areas. It turns out they do, but they’re more suited to colder climates.

Unlike most spiders, they don’t have sharp teeth. So if you’re scratched by a spider, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference.
