Several researchers have investigated the ability of spiders to hear sounds. They found that spiders can hear sounds up to five meters away. However, their ears are not particularly sensitive to sounds, so they can’t pick them up in the traditional way. Instead, they can hear through the air.
Researchers also found that spiders are able to detect sounds through solid objects. The researchers placed electrodes in the legs of a number of spiders and played them various sounds. Interestingly, the spiders’ legs responded to sounds as low as 68 decibels.
