Where Do Spiders Lay Eggs?

Generally, spiders lay eggs in the fall and spring. However, there are certain species that lay eggs throughout the year. Some house spiders live in storage rooms or basements, while others are found on the interior walls or in dark corners.

Female spiders carry an egg sac, which is a large, silky, ball of protective silk that is attached to the abdomen of the female. The sac is usually covered with more silk to prevent predators from getting to the eggs.

A single egg sac can contain hundreds of eggs. Spiders tend to leave their eggs exposed, though some will hide them to protect them from predators. They also produce several egg sacs during the course of a season.

Depending on the spider species, females may carry around their egg sacs or attach them to a surface. In addition, some may create a tent or a web for the eggs.

Some females lay up to two thousand eggs, while others lay only one or two at a time. Those that carry around an egg sac typically carry the young for a few weeks until they are big enough to go out on their own.

Some spiders use their sperm to fertilize their eggs. Afterward, the mother spider spins a sac, which is lined with silk, to enclose the eggs.

The eggs hatch in 2 to 3 weeks, and the baby spiders emerge. Most female spiders lay 150 to 200 eggs per sac.
