When Does Spiders Die?
WouterSpiders have evolved to survive cold temperatures. Many spiders produce a chemical called polyhydroxy alcohol, which works like a natural antifreeze to keep them warm. However, they cannot survive very long if the temperature drops below freezing.
Some spiders go through a state of hibernation, which is similar to sleeping, but they are still active. Some spiders use an artificial form of hibernation, where they hide under rocks, decaying debris or other shelter.
Some spiders live for a year or more, and others just one season. But whether you are living in the tropics, the subarctic or somewhere in between, spiders can be found in almost every climate. They make up a huge part of the insect world, and are beneficial to the environment. They also kill pesky houseflies, disease-carrying mosquitoes and other pests.
The best way to handle spiders is to eliminate their source. But it isn’t always easy to do. Some species are venomous, and others pose a health risk. You should never let them invade your home, but you can help prevent them by keeping your doors and windows closed, and by replacing broken screens.
Regardless of what kind of spider you live with, you may have spotted them in your shoes, on your walls, or in your closet. They can be a problem all year round, but they are especially prevalent during winter months.
While you might think that you’re dealing with an unnatural animal, most spiders are harmless. They also don’t want to be in the same space as humans.
