Spiders – Is It A Masterpiece?
Spiders is a cheap monster movie made by Nu Image (formerly known as Milennium). Although it was not a bad film, it was certainly not a masterpiece. It had a low budget, mediocre acting, and terrible special effects.
The story is a simple one, but the movie is lacking in a number of areas. The characters are unlikable, the acting is mediocre, and the script is cliche. The film makes a lot of references to old sci-fi movies. In fact, it is like a B-grade movie from the 1950s.
The creature effects are very bad, but not as bad as some of the worst sci-fi series on television. The climax is exciting, but it lacks atmosphere. There are some gory make-up effects, but they aren’t very convincing. The movie’s CGI ruins many scenes.
There are some good scenes, but the overall feel of the movie is very cheesy. The special effects are not very convincing, and the movie’s writing is a rehash of cheap sci-fi films. It’s not meant for serious horror fans, and the cast is mainly elementary school play actors.
However, the film has some nice homages to Blue Monkey and other pure horror movies. The sequences in the elevator shaft and college campus are memorable, and there are some fun, darkened corridors and slow-motion. There are also some creepy elements.
The script is cliche, but it is not a bad one. There is a lot of whimsy and humor, and the tongue is planted in the cheek. It has a few Shakespearian moments, but it lacks the grand storytelling that some of the best films in the genre contain.
