How Common Are Spiders in Hawaii?
Hawaii is an island paradise, and one of the most diverse places in the world. With a rich diversity of insects, the area is home to numerous species of spiders. However, some of these spiders can be venomous, making it important to be careful when traveling.
There are two main types of venomous spiders found in Hawaii. The southern black widow is the most dangerous, and has a venom that is 15 times stronger than a rattlesnake’s. This type of spider usually builds its webs in secluded areas, and is unlikely to attack humans unless provoked.
The brown widow is less dangerous than the black widow, but can cause some painful bites. This species is mainly found in tropical rainforests, and the venom it produces is thought to be less toxic due to its smaller size.
Another interesting species of spider in Hawaii is the Western spotted orbweaver. This spider has a marble-like body, with a white and black interlace pattern. Typically, this spider has two long stripes on its cephalothorax.
Adanson’s House Jumper Spider is a small spider that grows to 8mm in diameter. This spider prefers warm climates, and can be found in all Hawaiian islands. It is named after French naturalist Michel Adanson.
The striped lynx spider is an agile species that camouflages itself from prey. It lives in high vegetation, and can take down insects that are twice its size.
The giant daddy-long-legs spider is also a common species of spider found in Hawaii. This spider has legs that are 6.5 times longer than its body.
