Do Conkers Prevent Spiders?
Many people swear by conkers to repel spiders, but is it really true? Some claim that the little round stones contain a noxious chemical that kills spiders. Others say that it is simply a superstition.
Scientists at the University of Oxford are conducting a test to determine if they can effectively deter spiders. The British Arachnological Society has also looked into the topic. While they haven’t found any convincing evidence, they have been advised to test repellents on the spot.
However, some experts are split over the effectiveness of the chemical. One German chemist, Hartmut Foerster, says that the saponin in conkers is toxic to insects. Another scientist, Professor Fritz, has been using spider silk to create ‘living’ implants.
There are several other ways to keep spiders away. For example, you can use essential oils. Peppermint oil is known to be a good repellent. Or, you could try placing lemon peels on your doors or windows.
You might also want to consider placing a few cedar wood boards in your garden. They are known to repel moths, and can be purchased from stores such as Lakeland.
Finally, you can scatter fresh conkers in your garden, but you need to remember that these can be poisonous to some animals. Also, you should only water your conkers when the soil is dry.
In addition, the British Arachnological Society recommends using diatomaceous earth as a pesticide. It is made from fossilized plant matter and cuts up spiders.
