Can Spiders Survive Falls?

It’s possible for spiders to survive a fall. However, there are a few things you should know about the creature.

First, spiders have a low metabolic rate. In fact, they have a small oxygen consumption and are light in comparison to their size. This makes them a good candidate to survive a fall. They have special muscles that clamp shut at predetermined “break points” so that the leg can be shed before they fall victim to gravity.

Spiders can also float in the air. Smaller spiders are often able to land from tall buildings relatively unscathed. A spider with a longer leg has more air resistance, which makes them float – a feat that is not as easy for a larger, heavier spider.

For a spider to survive a fall, it needs to have a good grasp of what to do. Most will stay in their web, or at least in a place that has some form of security. But, some spiders are designed to be more flexible. Those with large bodies can get severely hurt if they take a few falls.

The most obvious way to do this is by using an antifreeze-like substance. Some spiders will use this to survive cold temperatures.

Spiders can also survive a drop into a sewage system. However, they do suffer from irritation and bleeding. If you see one in your home, it’s a good idea to keep them out of your home.
