Why Do Rats Make Clicking Noises?

Rats make clicking noises because they grind their incisors against each other to make sounds similar to cat purring. They often make these sounds along with boggling, which is when they pop their eyes in. These noises can be an indication that your rat is nervous or unwell.

Besides making clicking noises, your rat may also make squeaking or quivering noises. These are signs that they are excited or nervous, and indicate that they’re trying to communicate with you. Try to assess the rest of their body language as well. If the behaviour is constant, it is most likely a sign of stress.

Rats also like to be scratched and petted. You can pet them along the back (especially near the tail), which is particularly sensitive. You can also scratch their ears. However, rats are easily frightened by unfamiliar or strange noises. Hence, it is not advisable to use a loud rat repellent that could scare them.

If you are concerned about your rat’s behavior, it’s better to visit a veterinarian. This will give you an insight into the rat’s behavior, and may also prevent other serious conditions from developing.
