What Should Baby Rats Eat?
For a healthy baby rat, you should feed them a diet high in protein. This way, you can encourage your rat to nurse and grow. You should also add cheese or yoghurt to their diet. The mother rat stays inside her nest most of the time and only comes out when she is hungry. However, you should take note that some female rats may be aggressive. They may even turn into raging lions, with deep teeth. If you think this might be happening to your baby rat, you should consult a vet.
You should not feed baby rats too much food, as it could cause diarrhea in them. Small rodents may also suffer from coccidiosis, a parasite. Diarrhea is a life-threatening condition, so you must ensure you treat it as soon as possible. Milk irritates the digestive tract, which prolongs diarrhea. If your rat suffers from diarrhea, he will need a solution containing salts and chemicals to keep him hydrated.
When caring for your baby rat, keep a thermometer close by to monitor the temperature. A medical thermometer may not be sensitive to temperature swings, so a small weather thermometer is ideal. You can also use a hot water bottle to keep your rat warm and comfortable. A baby rat’s temperature should not drop below 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures may be dangerous for your rat and can cause hypothermia.
